Poikilotherme
Poikilotherme, Wechselwarme, Organismen, deren Körpertemperatur im Wesentlichen durch die Umgebungstemperatur bestimmt wird: alle Pflanzen und die meisten Tiere. Nur Vögel und Säugetiere können ihre Körpertemperatur konstant halten ⇒ Homoiotherme (Gleichwarme). Der Temperaturaustausch mit der Umgebung erfolgt bei Pflanzen v.a. durch Strahlungsabsorption und durch ⇒ Transpiration. Infolge besonders intensiven Stoffwechsels kann ihre Temperatur in seltenen Fällen über die Umgebungstemperatur hinaus erhöht werden, z.B. in keimenden Samen, im Kolben des Aronstabs Arum. Viele p. Landtiere zeigen verhaltensgesteuerte Thermoregulation, d.h. sie suchen aktiv Umweltbedingungen auf, durch die sich ihre Körpertemperatur der Vorzugstemperatur annähert (z.B. Sonnenbad bei Eidechsen). Physiologische Thermoregulation ist z.B. möglich durch Verdunstung von Wasser (zur Temperatursenkung z.B. bei einigen Schildkröten) und durch verstärkte Muskelbewegungen (z.B. »Muskelzittern« zur Temperaturerhöhung bei Bienen).
