Nucleotide, aus einer Pentose, einem Phosphorsäurerest und einer Purinbase (Adenin, Guanin) oder Pyrimidinbase (Cytosin, Thymin, Uracil) bestehende Stoffwechselregulatoren; sie dienen in Form von Adenosindiphosphat (ADP) und Adenosintriphosphat (ATP) als Energiespeicher und -überträger, in Form von Nicotinamidnucleotiden (NAD, NADP) als Partner bei Redoxreaktionen, tragen als Polyn. in den Nucleinsäuren die genetische Information und sind als Mischn. Bestandteile bestimmter Coenzyme. In einem N. ist das fünfte C-Atom im Zucker (Pentose) des Nucleosids mit der Phosphorsäure verestert. Die Namen der N. leiten sich von den Nucleosiden der entsprechenden Basen ab: z.B. Adenosinphosphat, Guanosinphosphat. Zu den zyklischen N. gehören zyklisches Adenosinmonophosphat (cAMP) und zyklisches Guanosinmonophosphat (cGMP), die v.a. als second messenger für die Hormonwirkung auf Enzymaktivitäten eine Rolle spielen können.
